Ax les Thermes, health resort in the Ariège region
Situated at the crossroads of the Lauze, Oriège and Ariège valleys, the town was already well known in the Roman Empire thanks to its its sulphurous hot springs. Excavations have uncovered coins that attest to the town's Roman presence. Around the year 1000, the town became part of the County of Foix. In 1260, on the orders of Saint Louis, Count Roger IV had a leper colony built to treat knights returning from the crusades who were suffering from the terrible disease.

The Bassin des Ladres, built in the 13th century, bears witness to the importance of thermal baths in Ax in the Middle Ages. Historical documents suggest that it was originally surrounded by buildings that no longer exist, with the exception of the Hôpital Saint Louis. In modern times, until 1960, the pool was used as a municipal wash-house.

Thanks to its sixty hot springsThe economy of Ax -les-Termes is closely linked to the spa industry, which has developed strongly since the arrival of the railway line in 1888.
Three establishments share the spa manna: Couloubret, le Modèle and le Teich.
It is mainly used to treat rheumatism, sciatica and respiratory ailments.
